The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially drawn to a close, and it may well have brought the curtain down on Cristiano Ronaldo's spectacular international career. It was Spain who ultimately reigned supreme in North America, seeing off an ill-tempered Argentina side at MetLife Stadium, eventually finding an extra-time winner through Ferran Torres, whose 106th-minute strike was enough to see off the defending champions to claim the famous gold trophy for the second time. For Portugal, it was the eventual champion La Roja who also brought their campaign to an end. Ronaldo and Co. attempted to upset the odds when they met Spain in the Round of 16, with online betting sites making Portugal a distant outsider. Outlets such as the popular Lucky Rebel Sportsbook made them a lengthy 3/1 outsider, but Roberto Martinez's side managed to keep a clean sheet for 91 minutes before Mikel Merino swept home a last-gasp winner to break both Portugal and CR7's respective hearts.

The defeat almost certainly brought to an end the international career of the iconic Ronaldo, and what a career it has been. The 41-year-old became the only man in history to score at six separate World Cups this summer, a record that has taken 20 years to claim and may well never be topped. His exploits this summer took his total all-time stats for the national team to a record 146 goals in 233 appearances, headlined by Portugal's maiden major international trophy back at Euro 2016 as well as two Nations League crowns.
Speaking after that defeat to Spain, Ronaldo said of his international future: "It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won't be making any rash decisions. I don't decide anything in the heat of the moment. Now is not important whether I will continue." Recent reports indicate that the upcoming Nations League clash against Wales at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on September 24th, home of Ronny's boyhood club Sporting CP, could well be his last international game.

Ronaldo netted 11 goals across six different World Cups throughout his spectacular international career, with his best finish being a semifinal run on his debut back in 2006. But which of those six tournaments saw the great man score the most goals? Let's take a look.
Ronaldo headed into the 2018 World Cup in Russia in the form of his life. Despite being 33 at the time the tournament got underway, the age at which most mortal footballers begin to somewhat slow down, CR7 was only getting stronger. He had just led Real Madrid to a famous three-peat of UEFA Champions League trophies, culminating with a 3-1 win against Liverpool in the 2018 showpiece in Kyiv. Those exploits saw him win the coveted Ballon d'Or in each of the previous two years, and with Portugal heading to Russia that summer as the reigning European champions following Portugal's shock Euro 2016 win two years prior, expectations were high.
In Portugal's opener against Spain, Ronny set about living up to them. He twice handed his side the lead in the first half, slotting away a fourth-minute penalty before rifling past David De Gea on the stroke of half-time. On both occasions, however, Spanish striker Diego Costa would draw La Roja level. In the second half, Nacho Fernandez, Ronaldo's Real Madrid teammate, handed Spain the lead with a stunning strike, and the game remained 3-2 until deep into the second half.
Then, the moment we all remember. With time ticking away, Portugal still trailed by a solitary goal, but they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Spanish penalty area. Ronaldo stepped up, bending a delicious right-footed strike over the wall and into De Gea's top corner to complete his hat trick and rescue his side a precious point.
And he wasn't done there. In Portugal's second game against Morocco, Ronaldo was on hand again, nodding home in the fourth minute to score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. After that, however, the goals began to dry up. Ronaldo went goalless in each of his side's next two games, and in the end, he was punished for it. Portugal were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay in the round of 16 after a devastating display from strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, with the defeat ending arguably Ronaldo's best hope to win the World Cup.
Questions lingered over Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. Could he still be his country's talisman at the age of 41? Did he still have enough gas left in the tank to press high like the modern game demands? And the critics only grew louder when Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland hit the ground running in each of their opening games while Ronaldo went goalless. In the end, though, the cream rises to the top.
Ronaldo had to wait until his second game to get off the mark, but eventually he did. He netted twice in a 5-0 drubbing of debutants Uzbekistan in Houston, with both being incredibly well-taken finishes. But a goalless draw with Colombia on matchday three saw Portugal finish as runners-up behind the South American side in Group K, setting up one of the most difficult potential runs to the final.
With Portugal staring at the barrel of an early exit 1-0 down against Croatia in the Round of 32, Ronaldo stepped up to the fore, netting from the penalty spot to score his third goal of the tournament, They would go on to win 2-1 after Gonçalo Ramos' last gasp winner, but ultimately, the eventual champions Spain brought the run to an end before it truly got going in the round of 16.
