Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first football star to become a billionaire. That's according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which has valued the net worth of CR7 at an estimated $US1.4bn. So, how has Ronaldo accumulated such vast wealth?
First of all, Ronaldo is adored by millions of people around the world. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar has fans everywhere and in fact, some enthusiasts solely follow the frontman as opposed to a specific team. While many tune into watch him play each week, some gamers who enjoy taking advantage of free spins for casino games and sports betting, wager on Ronaldo's chances of scoring. Fans are always engaged with the stars latest moves and track every step throughout his career. From his stunning skills on a football pitch to his glittering personality and unique look, Ronaldo has always been a poster boy and someone people look up to. CR7 has worked so hard to reach the top of the game, he is an inspiration to generations of people. It's this appeal which has opened doors and opportunities and afforded Ronaldo the chance to earn such riches to gain billionaire status.
Cristiano Ronaldo - Top goals for Al Nassr
Ronaldo's main source of income for more than two decades has been the money earned from being one of the most successful footballers on the planet. Not only was CR7 on the payroll at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, you can expect he earned bonuses for his stunning performances and trophy wins which included winning several league titles in England, Spain and Italy and clinching the Champions League.
However, Ronaldo has reportedly reached billionaire status after signing a new contract with current team Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia worth more than $400m. Joining the club in 2023, CR7 became the highest-paid footballer in history with an annual salary of £177. The Portugal international also received bonuses when on the pitch and received a reported 15% share in the Saudi Pro League outfit.
Ronaldo earned more than $550m from his salary between 2002 and 2023 and this has been supplemented, over the years, by various sponsorship deals. According to BBC Sport, the former Man United star had a deal with Nike for ten years worth nearly $18m annually while there were also endorsements with giant brands like Castrol and Armani which contributed to more $175m of his worth over the years.
Then there are Ronaldo's business ventures to consider. Since 2013, for example, CR7 Underwear has produced high quality briefs and trunks while also making socks, loungewear and even bathrobes which are sold in more than 50 countries around the world. Then there are the Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels. Stemming from a partnership between Ronaldo and the Pestana Hotel Group, this is a chain of hotels, which each boast a theme centered around the player, found in Funchal, Lisbon, Madrid and other cities.
This is all part of the Ronaldo empire which has contributed to his vast wealth and seen him become a billionaire as he approaches the end of his professional football playing career.

As well as one billion in the bank, Ronaldo also boasts more than one billion followers across social media and there is no sports star that has attracted that number of fans. The CR7 presence on platforms like Instagram means that enthusiasts interested in Ronaldo beyond the football pitch can stay updated on his lifestyle and passions which further enhances his appeal.
What's more, his rivalry with Lionel Messi who is also still playing for Inter Miami in the MLS, means that the Ronaldo narrative continues to develop and capture the imagination of followers who are keen to see him break records and produce quality in front of goal.
Well, it appears Ronaldo will keep on playing for the foreseeable and he will likely play for Portugal at the upcoming World Cup in the summer of 2026.
“I still have a passion for this,” he said at the Portugal Football Globes gala in October, as reported by The Guardian. “My family says it’s time to quit, and they ask me why I want to score 1000 goals if I’ve already scored 900-something. But I don’t think that way inside.
“I’m still producing good things, I’m helping my club and the national team. Why not continue? I am sure that when I finish I will leave full because I gave everything of myself. I know I don’t have many years left to play, but the few I have left, I have to enjoy them to the fullest.”
When the time does come to hang up his boots, there is no doubting Ronaldo will keep up his pursuits off the field while acting as a football ambassador having confirmed his status as one of the all-time greats in the history of the game.
Ronaldo becoming a billionaire has seen him enter a group of sport stars including Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer who all, reportedly, possess the same level of wealth. The CR7 brand continues to thrive and it will be interested to see which pursuits the superstar follows after his football career comes to an end.
