How Ronaldo is strategically investing in crypto

Cristiano Ronaldo big name in the crypto world

Cristiano Ronaldo has been dominating many fields beyond football and he recently also made a splash in the crypto world. From flashy NFT launches with Binance to a staggering lawsuit in the U.S., his digital investments have taken a sharp turn...

Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t just scoring goals in Saudi Arabia. Off the pitch, he’s taken bold steps into the crypto world — launching digital collectibles, signing big-money deals, and now facing legal heat. His foray into crypto hasn’t exactly gone under the radar, and it’s sparking just as much debate as his free kicks. Nowadays, there are already many platforms available like 777, where customers are able to explore betting and blockchain mechanics, so many believe this is only the beginning of a new era of entertaining...

Cristiano Ronaldo - No way to stop him!

From the pitch to the blockchain

Ronaldo made his crypto debut in November 2022 with a flashy NFT collection called CR7, launched in partnership with Binance. The collection featured animated Ronaldo figurines highlighting key moments of his career, from his humble beginnings to Champions League glory. It was a natural move — CR7 is a global brand, and the NFT space thrives on star power.

Sales started strong, with over 17,000 NFTs sold out of roughly 27,000 minted. Prices ranged from $77 to thousands, depending on rarity. Binance called it a “record-breaking drop.” For Ronaldo, it was just the beginning. He’s since released multiple collections, the latest being "Forever Worldwide: The Road to Saudi Arabia" in May 2024, celebrating his journey to Al Nassr.

The Binance deal: money, marketing, and influence

Ronaldo’s multi-year partnership with Binance goes far beyond NFTs. It’s a full-blown Web3 collaboration. Binance tapped into his 850 million+ followers to grow crypto adoption, while Ronaldo gained a fresh stream of revenue and digital exposure.

The strategy was clear: take football fandom and plug it into blockchain. By letting fans “own” digital moments, Binance and Ronaldo hoped to create emotional — and financial — value.

Trouble off the ball: a $1 billion lawsuit

But not everything went according to plan. In late 2023, a U.S. class-action lawsuit was filed against Ronaldo, claiming he helped promote unregistered securities via Binance NFTs. The plaintiffs argue that Ronaldo’s marketing led millions to invest in risky crypto products without proper disclosures.

And it’s not just small-time users who felt burned. Some of the CR7 NFTs dropped in value by over 98%, plummeting from launch prices to just over $1. The legal complaint, still active in Florida courts, seeks over $1 billion in damages. In May 2024, a judge denied Ronaldo’s motion to dismiss the case, meaning he may have to defend himself in U.S. court.

Beyond collectibles: deeper into crypto?

Though Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t openly promoted major tokens like Bitcoin or Ethereum, legal filings allege that Binance guided users — through his endorsement—toward other services: staking, BNB Vault, and trading of tokens like ADA, MATIC, and BUSD.

There have also been sketchy rumors — like one claiming he bought 100 billion XRP — but those haven’t been verified. What’s clear is that his involvement is being watched closely, especially now that regulators are tightening the screws on celebrity crypto deals.

Final whistle

Cristiano Ronaldo’s leap into crypto seemed like a slam dunk: global icon, cutting-edge tech, and fan loyalty all rolled into one. But like many athletes stepping into Web3, he’s finding that hype alone isn’t enough. Between a fading NFT market and mounting legal challenges, Ronaldo’s crypto game is now being played in a courtroom as much as on the blockchain.

One thing’s for sure: fans and investors should tread carefully. Because in crypto, even GOATs can get caught offside.
