19.10.2021 » Cristiano Ronaldo won the Player Of The Month award for September

Cristiano Ronaldo earns POTM in the Premier League in September 2021

It couldn't have happened sooner! Cristiano Ronaldo wrapped up his Player of The Month award in the Premier League, right in his debut month since he returned to England. Could this be an auspicious premonition for the remaining of the season?

It's not exactly an award that Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't collected before during his first spell with Manchester United, but it's certainly the first time he wins it after his return and it happened right in his first month playing since he returned to England. CR7 grabbed the Premier League's Player Of The Month award (POTM) for September, after beating the other candidates in votes. The Portuguese legend had been listed as the betting favorite according to experts from Caesars Sportsbook odds and the predictions turned out to be true. The Red Devils had a total of 3 league fixtures last month, collecting 2 wins and 1 loss. Ronaldo played the 90 minutes in all 3 games, scoring a total of 3 goals. This is the 5th time that the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward wins the Player Of The Month award in England. The other 4 occasions happened in 2006 (November; December) and 2008 (January; March).

Cristiano Ronaldo - Player of The Month (September 2021):

Veni, vidi, vici

The famous latin phrase could apply to Cristiano Ronaldo's life perfectly. Wherever the Portuguese star goes, he immediately impacts everyone around him. Even at the age of 36, it was no different in his return to Manchester and to the English Premier League. All it took was 3 games with the Red Devils shirt on his body and almost everyone seemed convinced to hand out the Player Of The Month award to the Portuguese forward.

In his first game for Manchester United this season on September 10, Cristiano Ronaldo played next to Sancho and Greenword in the Red Devil's attack and ended up scoring twice in front of an excited Old Trafford crowd. The hosts would easily beat Newcastle 4-1 on that afternoon, thanks to a somehow unexpected brace from Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward had just arrived to the club and it was definitely hard to imagine he would kickoff this campaign with such an impressive display.

A week later, on September 19, United visited Aston Villa and grabbed their 3rd straight win the league. Not without sweating a lot through a quite tense match. The hosts scored first in the first-half, but Cristiano Ronaldo was determined in extending his scoring record and netted the equalizer still before the half-time break. A late goal from Jesse Lingard in the 89th minute delivered United the precious 3 points and just like that, the Red Devils were on the top of the league next to favorites Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Ronaldo's third game for United in the Premier League didn't turn out to go very well for neither the player himself or the club. The Red Devils were handed their first Premier League defeat of the season in a 0-1 home loss and since that day, United is yet to rediscover the path to winning again in the league.

Beating the competition

In order to win the Premier League's Player Of The Month award, Ronaldo had to beat 5 other candidates. João Cancelo from Manchester City, Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea, Allan Saint-Maximin from Newcastle, Ismaila Sarr from Watford and Mohamed Salah from Liverpool were all on the race for the accolade, but the 36-year old forward left no doubts in the minds of the fans. Well, not only the fans who voted for the award in the Premier League's website, but also several football experts that formed a restrict panel for the league.

This prize from the Premier League comes right after Ronaldo collecting United's Player of The Month award for September, which included 2 extra appearances for the club, both for the UEFA Champions League.

On September 14, Ronaldo scored Manchester United's only goal against Young Boys, which ended up not being enough to avoid a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Swiss club.

Two weeks later, on September 29, Ronaldo scored a dramatic winner in a home game against Villarreal, earning United a priceless victory for their European aspirations this season.
