Cristiano Ronaldo impact on Manchester United

It's still soon to tell if United will do better in the Premier League this year than they did last year, but now that they have Ronaldo in their ranks, everyone does seem more optimistic. Can the Portuguese superstar become the leader this team needs both on and off the pitch?

It was an excellent summer transfer window for Manchester United, as the club was able to add some real quality to their squad with the acquisition of Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid's Raphael Varane, and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho. The signing of their former superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, came as a surprise to many United fans, as his transfer back to Old Trafford transpired very quickly in the last days of this summer's transfer window. He started his second debut for the club in his usual ruthless pattern though, with a brace coming against Newcastle and a goal against Young Boys in the 2-1 loss earlier this week...

Cristiano Ronaldo - Record breaker:

Are United's ambitions in Europe realistic?

As it stands, United are currently the sixth-favorites behind PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Liverpool, priced at 12/1 in the Champions League winner odds as they are expected to overcome the early setback and qualify relatively comfortably from the group. Ronaldo's return could see them feature as a dark horse in the Champions League predictions due to his pedigree in the competition, although the opening match wasn't encouraging even if Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off very early.

They are also very much in the mix for the title this season as they bid to win the league for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013. Given how well Ronaldo has settled back into the United team, this time as a center-forward, they are sure to be making a strong push, but it remains to be seen whether they can really contend with Chelsea, City and Liverpool.

Lest we forget that Ronaldo, on an individual basis, is the favourite for the PFA Player of the Year accolade. Consider the fact that the Portuguese star, alone, has scored 30 goals or more in 11 of his last 12 seasons and found the back of the net 36 times in the 2020/2021 campaign for Juventus. A similar tally to that is really going to help United in their bid for silverware.

With their squad equipped and mightily capable, United truly have one of the strongest attacks in European football.

Ronaldo signing may encourage big stars to stay

The return of Ronaldo may have come at exactly the right star as some of the big names in the United team are approaching the end of their contracts. Paul Pogba is one of those players, but reports suggest he's looking to stay at United now.

Ronaldo has given the squad a huge lift as they know the talent he possesses and what he's capable of. Inevitably, many players will want to be part of the Ronaldo-led journey over the next few years. His presence will also undoubtedly help United's recruitment over the next two transfer windows. If they feel they need to strengthen further, they should have no trouble convincing their targets that Manchester United have ambitious plans.

Fans look lifted again
at Old Trafford

Upon Ronaldo's return to action against Newcastle, Manchester United fans were full of voice during the 4-1 success. They were singing their hero’s name throughout, with many spectators donning their shirts with Ronaldo's 7 printed on the back.

The commercial benefit of signing a player like Ronaldo is obvious: United will be fully aware of his value and how they can cash in on it. However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's job is to make sure he gets the best from him on the field. It's likely that the United boss will be conscious of how much football Ronaldo plays this season. With the Premier League, Champions League, and two cup competitions, there's a lot of football to get through. Therefore, it would be no surprise if Solskjaer gave Ronaldo an occasional rest, especially around big fixtures.

The past summer's transfer window has been stupendous, with player movement the likes of which we simply haven't seen before. Ronaldo is back at the very club that turned him into the superstar he is today. He'll be desperate to deliver glory to the red side of Manchester once again.
