04.09.2021 » The importance of preserving healthy habits in a long career

Cristiano Ronaldo eating well

Over the years, we've seen a lot of football players reaching the top and eventually lose the drive and motivation that brought them there. That's certainly not the case with Ronaldo and at the age of 36, he keeps proving everyone he is just built different...

How many players have really been able to stay on top of their game for more than a decade? What about nearly two decades? Probably two, one being Lionel Messi due to its extraordinary and innate talent and the other, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar, however, couldn't afford to rely exclusively on its talent and has had to work harder than everyone else in the game to become the type of player he is today. From eating, sleeping or training, to basically everything that can have an impact in the type of athlete one can transform into, Ronaldo has been extremely meticulous with every single aspect of his life.

Post-match recovery tips

We all know how physically demanding a top footballer's career can be and with Ronaldo typically playing more than 60-70 games every single season and year after year, it's extremely important to pay extra attention to the post-match recovery process.

The Portuguese star has already admitted that after a game he often goes swimming, takes ice baths or even undergoes cryotherapy (via a liquid nitrogen treatment). This helps his body recovering faster, as well as their muscles regenerating at a faster pace. However and even though all these procedures are already highly beneficial for a top sports athlete like Ronaldo, there are still a few other alternatives that football players can rely on.

There is already plenty of medical evidence pointing to the fact that recreational cannabis and CBD in particular, can have a great impact on the way our muscles relax and by doing that, an athlete can speed up the recovery process after the temporary muscle fatigue that typically affects everyone who plays in a competitive game.

Eating Well, sleeping well!

Ronaldo's eating habits have been studied for many years and there's a good reason for that to happen. The Portuguese legend has exceptionally healthy habits when it comes to the kitchen, starting with the fact that he drinks a lot of water and he stays away of any sort of soft drinks, as we've been by his recent controversy when he moved away a Coca-Cola can during an EURO 2020 press-conference.

The 36-year old absolutely loves fish and it's not secret to anyone that one of his favorite dishes is the very Portuguese "Bacalhau à Brás". This is basically shredded salted cod, onions and thinny fried potatoes, all mixed up with scrambled eggs. He also eats a lot of tuna and sardines, which are all particularly rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential nutrients. And of course, the much-needed protein we all depend on, particularly any sports athlete.

In terms of sleeping, Ronaldo is well aware that his body needs to recharge properly every single night and that's why he never sleeps for less than 7-8 hours every single day. That's something he takes on very seriously and never misses! Sleeping the necessary amount of hours also allows our body to be stronger and less prone to injuries, which is extremely important in a football player's career.
