27.09.2020 » AS Roma 2-2 Juventus. Ronaldo rescues a point!

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his goal vs AS Roma with his tongue out

Juventus have dropped their first points in this Serie A's campaign, after visiting the Olimpico and drawing 2-2 against AS Roma. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace and rescued a very difficult point for the Bianconeri.

It was never going to be an easy game for the Italian champions, but playing with 10 men for roughly 30 minutes of the second half simply made tonight's mission even harder for Andrea Pirlo's men. Juventus couldn't go beyond a 2-2 draw against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, in a game where Cristiano Ronaldo outshined everyone around him by scoring two goals for his team. The Portuguese scored his first goal from the penalty spot still before the half-time break and then set the final score in 2-2 deep inside the second half, heading a great cross from the full-back Danilo. The champions will now play Napoli next weekend, as Pirlo tries to put his team back in the winning track.

Morata made his return-debut for Juve!

Four years after his 2-season spell with Juventus, Alvaro Morata returned to Turin and started in a Serie A game. Over the last few years, rhe Spanish forward has struggled to find his best form in Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, which somehow made fans being a lot more skeptic about his true value when his return to Juventus was announced just less than a week ago. Nevertheless, Pirlo knows him well from the time they shared the dressing room for the Bianconeri and had no doubts in playing him right from the start in tonight's clash against Roma.

After seeing Higuaín leaving the club to play in the United States and with Dybala still in the final stages of his injury recovery, Pirlo still doesn't have many attacking options when it comes to find Cristiano Ronaldo a partner in the last third of the pitch... Tonight, the Italian manager went for a more classical tactic, playing Szczesny in goal and a back-four formed by Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini and Cuadrado. The champions' midfield was left to Rabiot, McKennie, Ramsey and Kulusevski, while the attack has handed to Ronaldo and Morata. The two attackers had already played together back in the days where both played for Real Madrid...

The opening goal arrived in the 31st minute of the first half, when Rabiot failed to clear away a ball inside Juventus box and left it over to a Roma player in a good position to strike it. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Frenchman ended up blocking the shot with his hand, forcing the referee to point to the spot and award the hosts a penalty-kick. Jordan Veretout stepped up to take it and didn't disappoint the few fans in the stadium, giving his team the first lead of the night.

A few minutes later, Juventus responded in the same tone and also via a penalty-kick. Cristiano Ronaldo had just entered AS Roma box, looking for space to strike the ball with his right foot, but once he realized he had Pellegrini closing in on him, he managed to touch the ball straight to the Italian's arm and immediately earned a penalty for the visitors. The 35-year old didn't blink when he had to strike the ball from the spot and levelled the game at 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Ronaldo never lets us down!

However, Roma wasn't happy at all with the score and they kept pushing forward in the few minutes left they had to play before the half-time break. Juventus, on the other hand, was looking a bit too relaxed after the equalizer and allowed the hosts to surprise them in a fast counter in the first-half's added time. Once again, Jordan Veretout was Juventus' executioner, as he beat Szczesny for the second time on the night to restore the 1-goal lead for AS Roma.

This game's changing moment happened in the 62nd minute, when Adrien Rabiot misjudged his action and tackled an opponent from behind. The referee didn't hesitate showing him the second yellow card and the consequent red card, which naturally forced Juventus to approach the rest of the game with 10 men on the pitch and still being 1 goal behind on the scoreboard.

Once the red card was shown to Rabiot, odds were definitely against the Italian champions. It was already being difficult for the Bianconeri to impose their style of play with 11 men on the pitch and no one expected their task to get easier with one man less for more than 30 minutes. Nevertheless, Cristiano Ronaldo showed up again when his team needed him the most and tied the game at 2 around the 69th minute of the game. This time, the former Real Madrid forward found a way to beat AS Roma goalkeeper when a good cross from Danilo allowed him to fly above everyone else around him and head the ball into the back of the net. That's the 3rd goal in 2 games for Ronaldo and Juventus managed to take back to Turin an important point from a rival home ground.
