20.07.2020 » Juventus 2-1 Lazio. Ronaldo scores twice and Juve can smell the title

Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating a goal

It was a big game night in Turin this Monday, as Juventus hosted Lazio at the Allianz Stadium. The Bianconeri defeated the Roman side by 2-1 thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and are now holding a 8-point advantage over second-placed Inter Milan.

Another giant step for Juventus in their title ambitions, as the Vecchia Signora welcomed Lazio in Turin and beat their rivals by 2-1. Following a goalless first half, Maurizzio Sarri's men realized they needed a more attacking attitude after the break and got rewarded with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, one from the penalty spot and the other one from a counter-attack play led by Paulo Dybala. The Portuguese star has now scored 30 goals in the Serie A and has tied Lazio's Ciro Immobile on the top of the goalscorer standings. The two players seem to be extremely motivated to become the next "Capocannoniere" and if we had to gamble on Casinot, we would put all our money on Ronaldo. The Italian forward also scored a goal tonight from the penalty spot and it's going to be interesting to see who will win this particular race in the upcoming weeks.

A matter of status...

Juventus are very close to celebrate their 9th straight Serie A title in Italy and tonight they took another step towards their main objective: maintain the supremacy in Italy. With both teams coming off a negative sequence of results, it was important to understand who was going to have the psychological edge and take home the 3 points. Juve hadn't won any game in their last 3 fixtures in the Serie A, while Lazio's bad moment was even worse as they hadn't felt the winning taste in their last 4 games.

Sarri changed multiple players in his starting lineup tonight, but as usual this season, he kept Szczesny in goal in a league game. In the defense, Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado played on the wings, while De Ligt and Bonucci completed the back four fine. The Italian champions' midfield was formed by Rabiot, Rodrigo Bentancur and Aaron Ramsey, as the usual starters Pjanic and Matuidi were given some rest on the bench. In attack, Douglas Costa gave his support to Paulo Dybala and the inevitable Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was a cold first-half from many perspectives. Neither side managed to score or impose their football on the pitch and the actual best chance to break the deadlock came in the 43rd minute of the first half, when Ciro Immobile's strike slammed into the post and allowed Maurizzio Sarri to take a deep breath and change his strategy for the second half...

Ronaldo and Immobile are on fire!

The champions returned to the second half with a different spirit. Lazio shouldn't be taken slightly and Sarri made sure his players changed their attitude right after the break... It took nearly 5 minutes for the change in mentatility to produce its results, as Ronaldo earned a penalty-kick after seeing one of his many shots colliding in an opponent's arm. The Portuguese was obviously the man stepping up to the plate and as usual, he didn't miss and gave his side the lead.

Just three minutes later, Juventus celebrated their second goal following a huge mistake from Lazio's defense. Dybala forced the Romans to lose possession in a forbidden area of the pitch and immediately raced without opposition towards Lazio's box. With just the goalkeeper in front and Ronaldo showing up by his side, the Argentine assisted the Portuguese for an easy tap-in and Juventus suddenly found themselves 2 goals up.

In the last 10 minutes of the game Lazio managed to react and throw Juventus against the ropes. The visitors earned a penalty-kick in the 83rd minute and after seeing Immobile converting it, Juventus trembled and feared another upset. However and fortunately for the Vecchia Signora, Lazio wouldn't score any further goal and the 3 points stayed at home.
