26.02.2020 » Lyon 1-0 Juventus. A bad night with no shots on target...
It was a bad night for the Italian champions, who travelled to France to clash with Olympique Lyonnais for the Champions League's first leg of the last-16 stage and were beaten 1-0 thanks to a goal from Lucas Tousart. Juventus struggled to play their football especially in the first half and the hosts made the Vecchia Signora pay for their poor performance with a goal in the 31st minute. After the break and despite the improvements shown by Maurizzio Sarri's men in terms of controlling the game, Juve never really managed to threat scoring against a very defensive Lyon side and finished the game with a total of 14 shots, but none of them on target... Can Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates complete the comeback in the second leg scheduled for March 17?

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Lyon:
A first half to forget...
It's almost as if Juventus tasted their own medicine tonight against Lyon, as they crashed against a well organized team, who knew what they were doing the whole time and were cynical enough to grab the lead and defend the very precious advantage until the referee's final whistle. A 1-0 away loss is always very tricky disadvantage to overcome in a second leg, especially if you face a team who knows how to counter-attack...
This Wednesday, Sarri left Matuidi and Higuaín on the bench and played a quite conservative lineup. Szczesny started in goal, with the Brazilians Danilo and Alex Sandro on the sidelines. De Ligt and Bonucci paired up in the center, while Giorgio Chiellini was left out of the squad after having started in the previous game against SPAL. The 35-year old defender has been recovering from a serious injury since the end of last year and even though he's already fit to compete, Sarri preferred to leave him out of tonight's clash in order to avoid picking up another injury.
In midfield, the Italian champions played with Pjanic, Rabiot and Bentancur, with Juan Cuadrado also helping out in the defensive process everytime the team lost possession. In attack, it was up for Paulo Dybala and a very in-form Cristiano Ronaldo to look for goals, but neither one or the other managed to leave Lyon's defense very uncomfortable throughout the 90 minutes...
No shots on target...
The first half showed a very motivated and determinated Lyon side, with the French giants storming against Juventus' goal everytime they had the chance to do so. Eventually, Lyon found the back of the net in the 31st minute of the first half, when Houssem Aouar managed to breach into Juventus' box and assist Lucas Tousart for an easy finish against Szczesny. The hosts knew the importance of the goal they just had scored, but they also knew that it would be vital to not concede in order to increase their chances of going through to the next round of the competition.
In the second half and as expected, Juventus had a lot more possession and attacking plays, but Lyon held well at the back and resisted until the end. In total, Juve had 14 shots throughout the whole game and every one of them missed the target either by going wide or by getting blocked in the way. In the last 45 minutes of the game, Juventus had 73% possession but failed to convert their dominance into big scoring chances.
In the last minutes of the game, Juventus still asked for a penalty in two different occasions, but the referee ended up ignoring the Italians' claims and waved to play on in the two situations. Similarly to what happened last season in this round of the competition, Juventus will have to pull off a home comeback, after having lost in the first leg. And if they've did it after losing 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in the last campaign, why not repeating the same receipt by overcoming a 1-0 deficit against Lyon this year?
