12.12.2018 » Young Boys 2-1 Juventus. A surprising loss in Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo being pushed

Juventus were handed their second loss of the season and once again, it happened in another European fixture. The Vecchia Signora failed to impress in their last fixture of the Champions League group stages and were beaten 2-1 by Young Boys.

It was hard to imagine tonight's outcome, especially after we saw Massimiliano Allegri sending a strong statement to their opponents when he announced his lineup in Bern. Juventus didn't have the first place of the group secured ahead of tonight's fixture and that was probably one of the reasons why Allegri didn't rotate his team that much. Nevertheless, Young Boys managed to surprise the visiting side and handed Juve a 2-1 loss, their second of the season. Despite the unpleasant scoreline, the Italians finished on top of the group thanks to Valencia's 2-1 win against Manchester United at the Mestalla. The Champions League round-of-16 draw will now take place next Monday morning...

Juventus got punished

We can't really say that Juventus didn't start the game well. The Bianconeri were able to dominate the game in the first half an hour of the match, creating several good goalscoring chances in the process. They were all over the place and the only thing missing was in fact the most important one... scoring!

Allegri played with Szczesny in goal and a back-four formed by De Sciglio, Bonucci, Rugani and Cuadrado. In midfield, the "Old Lady" had Pjanic, Bentancur and Bernardeschi responsible for dictating the pace of the game. In the last third of the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo was accompanied by Douglas Costa and Mario Mandzukic, who captained Juventus on the night.

The hosts would break the deadlock around the 30th minute of the first half, after a foolish foul from Alex Sandro inside Juventus' box. The Brazilian, who had replaced Cuadrado roughly 5 minutes before, tripped on the ball and ended up clipping Nicolas Ngamaleu. The referee pointed to the spot and Guillaume Hoarau scored his first goal of the night.

With the half-time approaching, Juventus were struggling to level things up and the only comforting feeling was knowing that Manchester United were also trailing in Valencia.

A loss without consequences

The second half showed us a more desperate Juventus side, pushing forward as much they could and exposing themselves to counter-attacks. And that's precisely how Young Boys punished their opponents in the 68th minute, when they extended their lead to a shocking 2-goal difference. Guillaume Hoarau picked up a pass from a teammate with plenty of space to think, got rid of Rugani and then finished the play with a great left-footed strike. Juventus were down by 2 for the first time in the season...

Juventus' trademark image has always been their strong defense, but if there's something they were extremelly poor tonight it was precisely that. Of course Rugani is no Chiellini, but still, the Bianconeri should have done better... The only positive moment in the game for Juve happened in the 80th minute, when Cristiano Ronaldo assisted Dybala for a terrific shot just outside the box.

It was Dybala's 5th goal in this year's group stage, while Cristiano Ronaldo will have to content with only one goal so far in the competition. We have a feeling things will change in the knockout rounds though...
