27.11.2018 » Juventus 1-0 Valencia. Rock solid at the back!

Cristiano Ronaldo leads Juventus goal celebrations after assisting Mandzukic for the winner

Juventus are through to the Champions League next stage, after securing another win against Valencia tonight in Turin. Mandukic goal in the second half was enough to beat Valencia 1-0 and the Vecchia Signora are now in a great position to finish top of the group.

Juventus hosted and defeated Valencia by 1-0 tonight at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, thanks to a goal scored by Mario Mandzukic in the 59th minute of the game. With this win, the Vecchia Signora secured their ticket to the Champions League round-of-16 stage, but they'll still have to wait for the last fixture before knowing if they finish first or behind Manchester United in this group. Tonight and like we've seen many times throughout the years, it was all about defending well and scoring a crucial goal. Cristiano Ronaldo didn't score but he certainly made all the difference in his assist to Mandzukic for the only goal in this game.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Valencia:

Ronaldo assists to the winning goal

While Cristiano Ronaldo has found it difficult to score goals in his favorite tournament this season and of course the suspension did not help, he's become a master creator for Juventus this year, showcasing a side of his game many haven't seen for quite a few years now. The Ronaldo - Manduzkic partnership has started to yield some excellent results and the Croatian is enjoying playing next to Cristiano Ronaldo.

One reason for Ronaldo's lack of goals in the Champions League this season has been the really poor crossing from the wings. In fact, the only consistently good crosser has actually been Ronaldo himself, while he's suffered due to poor service from his teammates.

The goal today came courtesy of some more inventive work by Ronaldo. The quick feet may have reminded some fans of his Manchester United days, as he dribbled past Gabriel and centered a brilliant cross for Manduzkic. He would score his 8th goal of the season and is well on pace to have his best goalscoring season at Juventus by far. Many of them due to Ronaldo's excellent play on the wing.

Juventus rely on their defense

Allegri is also quite comfortable sitting back when Juventus have an advantage. Against Manchester United, this backfired badly late and today was not much different at all. Juventus have remained relatively uninspired in attack apart from Ronaldo's expanded creativity this season and while it's lead to results, one wonders how it will affect the team later in the season against the big favorites to win the competition.

But for Ronaldo, even without the usual Champions League goals that typically allow him to be on the top of the topscorer standings, his performances have added such a spark to the Juventus attack that's it's hard to measure it by numbers. And if there is anyone who can turn it on during the knockouts, it's the greatest player in Champions League history.

With this win, Juventus have secured a berth in the knockout stage and top the group currently. With their last game against Swiss side Young Boys coming up in a couple weeks, Ronaldo may end up being rested. Or not...
