24.10.2015 » Celta Vigo 1-3 Real Madrid. League leadership cemented in Vigo

Cristiano Ronaldo goal in Celta Vigo 1-3 Real Madrid

The league leadership was at stake in Vigo this Saturday afternoon, but Real Madrid proved their superiority by beating Celta de Vigo 1-3 in their own backyard. Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock and was then followed by goals from Danilo and Marcelo.

Real Madrid hung on by a thread against a spirited 10-man Celta Vigo side to go top of La Liga after beating the home side 1-3 at the Balaidos stadium. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Danilo (his first ever for the club) gave the Merengues a 2-0 lead in what was an impressive first half for Los Merengues. However, it did take a series of impressive Keylor Navas saves to keep Celta de Vigo at bay throughout most of the game. The hosts managed to cut distances near the end through an unstoppable strike from Nolito, but Marcelo would seal the deal inside added time and secured the 3 points for Madrid.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Celta Vigo:

Real Madrid looked brilliant early, with the hardworking duo of Jesé and Vasquez doing well to flank Cristiano Ronaldo in the center forward position. Eventually, it would be Vasquez's smart square ball into space that would set up the Portuguese forward, and his well hit shot while falling away from goal would put Madrid up 1-0 after 8 minutes.

Soon after the lead was doubled, this time Jesé would be the provider playing a well timed cross field ball the to flying Danilo, who then buried a shot past Sergio Alvarez for his first goal in Madrid colors.

Celta had a few chances of their own, but each time they came close, Keylor Navas would be there. The Costa Rican has been absolutely phenomenal this campaign with high caliber performances week in and week out.

The second half however would be a different story. After Celta Vigo defender Gustavo Cabral was sent off for dissent, Madrid seemed to have lost their razor sharp focus and stopped pressing their opponent into submission. After a series of failed attempts, Celta's star man Nolito would give the homeside a chance with an excellent shot into the corner of the net, the only way Navas could really be beaten today.

Real Madrid would endure another serious scare just moments later, when substitute John Guidetti picked up the ball around the penalty area. Unfortunately for Celta, his left footed shot would go wide.

As Celta pressed forward in stoppage time, Madrid found some space in the back and Marcelo, who was brilliant all game, was able to seal the result with a tidy near post finish from a tight angle. A 3-1 victory in the end, but it was far closer than the scoreline would indicate...

Some notes about today's game:
- Jesé has looked fantastic in his last three outings. He has regained all of his pace and his decision making has been good as well.
- Ronaldo scored today, but was still a little wasteful in front of goal. Had a golden opportunity in extra time to seal the game, but botched his attempt to chip the keeper.
- Lucas Vasquez is a very tidy player and a hard worker. He was all over the pitch today and even notched an assist for the opener. Solid performance from the former Castilla man.
