14.04.2015 » Atletico 0-0 Real Madrid. The Bernabéu will speak next week

Cristiano Ronaldo backheel touch against Atletico

The two Madrid powerhouses clashed this Tuesday night at the Vicente Calderón for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, but they both had to settle with a goalless draw. The second leg will be played right next week and everything will be decided at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid couldn't go beyond the 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderón and basically delayed all decision to next week's return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. It was a high-octane and high pressure match, with a multitude of chances at each end and frankly, it was easily also the best performance for Real Madrid against Atletico this season. Nevertheless, Madrid were still unable to score against their city rivals and the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals tie ended scoreless...

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Atletico Madrid:

Unlike some of the previous matchups this season, Real Madrid focused on quick passing and the fast paced possession style opened up tons of opportunities at the other end. What they weren't counting with though, was to get stopped almost miraculously time and time again, by Atletico's goalkeeper on the night, the Slovenian Jan Oblak.

Still without an away goal, Real Madrid are very vulnerable and like it happened in the last "El Clasico", there was a huge drop-off between the first and second halves in terms of overall performance. That said, it was good to see the Merengues take the game to Atletico today, and if they play like they did in the first half next week, they should be through to the semi-finals.

The reigning European champions should have had the lead four minutes in. A mistake by Diego Godin left Gareth Bale clean through on goal with only Oblak to beat, but his left footed shot was well saved by the keeper. It was a superb chance for Bale, who should have done better despite Oblak's heroics.

Real Madrid would continue to impose their will on the game, a welcome sight considering how poor they have been against Atletico this year. But every time Madrid came knocking at the doorstep, Atletico's fantastic man between the sticks would be there to slam the door shut. A great long range strike from Bale was parried wide in the 31st minute and it would be merely six minutes before he'd be called into action again, this time with an excellent save from a long range shot by James Rodriguez.

Soon after, Oblak's opposite number Iker Casillas would be called into action after a risky give away at the back from Sergio Ramos. A few minutes later, Oblak would deny James again, this time from point blank range. It was end to end stuff, as both teams headed into the dressing room with the scoreboard untouched, Madrid probably feeling frustrated and Atletico a bit lucky...

In the second half it was a slightly different story. Atletico got into the game more and Real Madrid were left to rue their inability to capitalize in the first half.

The game was a lot scrappier, as both teams became increasingly physical. Mario Mandzukic and Sergio Ramos got into more than a few scuffles, and at some point of the game, the Croat actually left the field of play with blood streaming from his forehead.

There would be a few more chances, in fact, the game would end with a flurry of opportunities for Atletico, as both teams hung on to keep their chances in the second leg alive. Marcelo's booking will be a huge blow however. The left back is due to miss the return tie, but Real Madrid will take solace in the fact that for large portions of the match they dominated their city rivals.

Now, it will be time to make it count...
