30.07.2015 » Real Madrid 0-0 Milan. Chinese tour ends with a win on penalties

Cristiano Ronaldo chasing the ball in Real Madrid 0-0 AC Milan

Real Madrid and AC Milan have clashed in Shangai this Thursday morning, in a game where neither of the sides were able to score a goal during the 90 minutes of the game. The Merengues have beaten the Rossoneri in a penalty shootout though, taking home their second International Champions Cup of the pre-season.

Real Madrid have finished their Chinese pre-season tour with a win on penalties against AC Milan, following a goalless draw in Shangai and a penalty shootout which ended with a 10-9 scoreline favorable to the Merengues. Rafael Benítez made a few changes to his team by rotating several players in his defense and midfield sectors, which may have very well been the cause for a significant dip in how the team performed this morning. Cristiano Ronaldo started the game on the Merengues lineup, but never had the chance to take one of the penalty kicks though. The Portuguese star came off in the 71st minute, when he got replaced by James Rodríguez. Real Madrid will now start the preparations for the Audi Cup, where they'll be playing in German soil on August 4 and August 5.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs AC Milan:

It wasn't one of Real Madrid's finest days. After all the optimism generated following the wins against Manchester City and Inter Milan, Rafa Benítez's men took a step back against AC Milan and could have lost the game in the first 45 minutes. Very good displays first from Keylor Navas and later from Kiko Casilla, assured that the Merengues would keep a clean sheet until the final whistle and take their chances to the penalty shootout...

The two goalkeepers stepped up when their team needed them the most, and while Keylor Navas had a lot of shots to stop, Kiko Casilla was able to show all his quality in just a few saves.

As for the first half, AC Milan's midfield took over the operations in this game, and neither Modric nor Casemiro proved to be capable of denying the Italian's intents. And when Madrid's midfield doesn't work, it's the BBC upfront who often pays the bill. Bale, Benzema and Cristiano never looked as threatening as they should, which was naturally the main reason for Madrid to have gone through the 90 minutes of this game without scoring a single goal.

The game changed a lot after the break, mostly because of the replacements brought in by Mihajlovic and Benítez. Milan suddenly looked a bit weaker, while Madrid appeared to be a bit more confident when they had the ball at their disposal. Isco, Kroos and Jesé Rodríguez were determined in switching the fate of this game but unfortunately, the attacking sector never seemed to be clicking as it was expected. Diego López denied Cristiano Ronaldo one of Madrid's best chances to score, while Kroos saw his dangerous shot being blocked by Zapata shortly after. That pretty much sums up what Real Madrid has done in the attack this Thursday morning...

At the other side of the pitch, AC Milan were threatening to break the deadlock through counter attacks, but found in Kiko Casilla their biggest obstacle to score. With the clock running out and the two teams unable to draw the first blood, this game's destiny was about to be sealed in a penalty shootout decision. Lottery or not, as some insist in describing these moments, it was Real Madrid who left the pitch victorious with a 10-9 scoreline in their favor.

AC Milan's new signing Carlos Bacca, was the first to miss a penalty, followed by Real Madrid's Toni Kroos. We then had to wait until it was the goalkeepers' turn and it would be Donnarumma collapsing to the pressure first by missing his, after having already seen Casilla converting the 10th for Real Madrid. The Merengues leave China with another ICC trophy in the bag and with their sight already in the Audi Cup.

In the meantime and as the new season approaches, there's an interesting infographic recently made by Wettbuero about Ronaldo and Messi's duel in several fronts. The graphic contains their odds for winning the Pichichi, becoming the top scorer in the Champions League and winning the FIFA Ballon d'Or 2015.
